Who is at risk of developing osteoporosis?
1 in 2 women and 1 in 3 men over the age of 60 will develop a bone fracture due to osteoporosis.
- Women are at a greater risk of developing osteoporosis as they have less bone stock and low oestrogen levels after menopause increases bone loss.
- Men are also at risk but do not have as rapid bone loss as they do not experience menopause.
- Family history of osteoporosis.
- Anyone who has an inadequate intake of calcium.
- Those who have low levels of Vitamin D. People at risk are:
- Elderly people as they have a reduced capacity to produce Vitamin D.
- People who are bedridden, in nursing homes, hostels or are homebound.
- Dark skinned people as their skin produces less Vitamin D.
- Women who cover their skin for cultural or religious reasons.
