VagiCare
What is VagiCare?
VagiCare is a vaginal pessary that is clinically proven to regulate and maintain the natural pH of the vagina. It contains a special sustained release formulation of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) that controls the release of vitamin C slowly over several hours. This ensures that the vaginal pH is regulated over a prolonged period of time. The slow release also prevents the vitamin C from irritating the vagina which may occur with a sudden release of vitamin C.
How does VagiCare work?
When the vaginal pH is higher than normal, the lactobacillus can be replaced by an overgrowth of other bacteria. The vitamin C in VagiCare regulates the pH of the vagina. This inhibits the growth of bacteria which cannot survive at low pH. Lactobacillus thrives at a low pH and produces lactic acid to keep the vaginal environment slightly acidic. The acidity of the vagina helps control bacteria and prevents the overgrowth of infection-causing types of bacteria that prefer a higher pH. This provides an effective natural protection for the vagina against infection and irritation. VagiCare helps relieve symptoms of high vaginal pH.
How to use VagiCare?
Remove one VagiCare pessary and insert deep into the vagina, once daily, preferably at bedtime. The duration of treatment is usually one pessary at bedtime for a period of 6 days or as directed by your healthcare professional.
VagiCare is ideal for use after antibiotics to promote lactobacillus but should not be used at the same time as antibiotics. Treatment with antibiotics can reduce the number of lactobacillus in the vagina and this may increase vaginal pH. It is not necessary to interrupt the treatment because of menstrual bleeding. You can continue to use VagiCare during your period. If symptoms persist your healthcare professional may recommend a longer treatment. There is no limitation in the length of the treatment period.
If you are pregnant you should seek medical advice before starting VagiCare and your doctor will advise the duration of treatment.
Who should not use VagiCare?
Do not use VagiCare if you are allergic to vitamin C (ascorbic acid). Do not use VagiCare if you are suffering from Candida (yeast infection) as a different kind of treatment is required.
VagiCare can be used during breastfeeding. Consult your healthcare professional before use during pregnancy.
Does VagiCare have any unwanted effects?
In rare cases, vaginal itching or burning may occur. This reaction has also been observed with other vaginal preparations. If you have any concerns you should consult your healthcare professional. If you have an allergy to vitamin C the product should be discontinued.
Are there any known drug interactions with VagiCare?
Due to the low dose of vitamin C in VagiCare and the vaginal administration, it is highly unlikely that VagiCare will result in an interaction with other medications. If you have any concerns you should consult your healthcare professional.
How do I know if my pH is within the normal range?
Measuring vaginal pH is one of the tests your doctor may perform but you can measure your own pH levels conveniently at home with a vaginal pH tester called VagiTest. Any woman who has symptoms of vaginal discharge, odour or itching should use VagiTest to determine whether the symptoms may be due to pH imbalance. VagiTest can help determine whether vaginal discharge is due to a disruption of the natural pH balance. A yeast infection can survive in low pH and usually does not cause an increase in pH.
