OsmoLax clinical evidence
OsmoLax is identical to a macrogol 3350 product available in the U.S. that has been clinically proven in over 20 clinical studies. The studies confirm that macrogol 3350 is clinically proven to be more effective than placebo and very well tolerated as it does not produce cramps and gas. In addition some studies compared the product to lactulose where it was found to be as effective but much better tolerated. The clinical studies have been done in children as well as adults and in various degrees of constipation in both short term and long term use.
There has been one clinical study1 which compared a macrogol product without electrolytes with a macrogol product with electrolytes. It was found that there was no difference in terms of efficacy and side effects. Importantly there were no clinically significant differences in plasma electrolyte levels. 85% of patients in the group taking the macrogol product without electrolytes were willing to continue treatment compared to 65% in the group taking the macrogol product with electrolytes, because of the salty taste of the latter.
