Ovuplan Scope

1. Can everyone use OvuPlan Scope?
OvuPlan Scope is most suitable for couples who are trying to have a family and want to determine the fertile time of the menstrual cycle. As OvuPlan Scope identifies the days when oestrogen levels are high, it is not suitable for use in the following situations:

  • Fertility medication can increase oestrogen levels and may result in the fern pattern.
  • Contraceptives (pills or injections) affect hormone levels and may affect your saliva. You may have to wait for 1 or 2 natural cycles after stopping contraceptives before starting to use OvuPlan Scope.
  • Any medication which affects the mucus may give a false result eg. expectorant medication for a cough.
  • Pregnancy increases oestrogen levels and may result in a constant fern pattern.
  • Women with very low oestrogen levels may not have enough oestrogen to produce the fern pattern.
  • Women with naturally high oestrogen levels may produce a constant fern pattern.
  • Women approaching menopause may not have enough oestrogen to produce the fern pattern.
  • Infections of the mouth and throat may contaminate the saliva and affect the reading.

2. I have used OvuPlan Scope for several months and each month have had sexual intercourse during the fertile period but I have not become pregnant yet. What is wrong?
It may take normal, healthy couples more than a few months to become pregnant. There are many factors that affect your ability to become pregnant, even if you have intercourse during your fertile period. If after many months you still have no success, consult your doctor. Since you have been monitoring your fertile period, you will be able to give your doctor a picture of your menstrual cycle.

1. How accurate is the OvuPlan ovulation predictiontest?
In laboratory studies, OvuPlan has been proven to be 99% accurate.

2. Is timing critical in getting an accurate result?
Yes! A timer or watch is suggested to monitor the observation time. The colour intensity of both the test and control lines increases over time. The rate of increase may differ between the two lines. Thus, the test should be read within the specified time (5 to 10 minutes).

3. What time of day can I test?
You may test at any time of the day at your convenience, however you should test at approximately the same time each day. We do not recommend use of your first morning urine; you should reduce your liquid intake in the 2 hours before testing.

4. Do I need to compare my daily readings?
No! Each daily reading tells you whether you have detected your LH surge.

5. Do I need to use all 7 tests?
No! You can stop testing when you detect your LH surge and save the remaining tests for the next month if necessary.

6. What if neither the test line nor the control line appear in the window?
Make sure enough urine has been applied to the absorbent tip. If you do not see that the urine has migrated up the membrane through the window, the test is void. Do not re-test using the same test device.

7. What could interfere with my test results?
If you are pregnant, have recently been pregnant or have reached menopause, you may get a misleading result. This may also be true if you are taking certain prescription drugs or receiving injections that contain human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) or LH.

8. Will oral contraceptives affect the result?
After using the pill, your cycle may be irregular and may take some time to stabilise again. You may wish to wait until you have had two normal periods before starting to use the OvuPlan test. Follow your doctor’s advice on when to best try to become pregnant.

9. I have used all seven tests and I do not see a surge. What do I do?
If the LH surge is not detected after seven days of testing, you may have miscalculated your test start date. Since not every woman ovulates mid-cycle, you may not detect the LH surge in the first seven days of testing. This could mean you have not ovulated yet. Continue testing with a second OvuPlan ovulation prediction kit.

10. I have tested for 8 days and I did not see my LH surge. What is wrong?
About 90% of ovulating women with regular cycles will see their surge during 8 to 10 days of testing. If you do not, it could mean that you have not ovulated this month (even though you may menstruate). If you are having a short cycle this month, it is possible that you ovulated before you started testing. If you are having a long cycle this month, you may not have ovulated yet. You may continue testing or test again next month. Don’t worry, it’s normal to have an occasional short or long cycle, or to have a cycle without ovulating. If after several months of testing, your LH surge is still not detected, you may wish to consult your doctor.

11. I have used the OvuPlan test for several months, and each month I have seen a surge and have had intercourse that day or night. I have not become pregnant yet.

12. If the OvuPlan test can determine my most fertile time, why can’t I use it for contraception (birth control)?
Sperm can survive up to 72 hours (3 days), and this test predicts your LH surge only up to 24 to 36 hours in advance. Therefore, if you have intercourse before you discover your surge, the egg can still be fertilised.
