Q. I find it difficult to swallow large tablets, can I crush the OsteVit-D & Calcium tablets?
A. OsteVit-D & Calcium tablets are chewable so there is no need to crush them. They have a pleasant vanilla flavour. The tablets are also scored so that they can be split and then swallowed if preferred.
Q. How many tablets of OsteVit-D & Calcium should I take?
A. The recommended dosage is 1 to 2 tablets per day. Check the table on the calcium content of selected foods to calculate your daily intake of calcium. If you are not getting much calcium in your diet you should take 2 tablets a day.
Q. What product should I take if I get my RDI of calcium in my diet but I don’t expose myself in the sun?
A. OsteVit-D contains 1000IU of Vitamin D3 only and is ideal for those with adequate calcium intake who are Vitamin D deficient.
Q. When should I take my OsteVit-D & Calcium tablets?
A. The calcium in OsteVit-D & Calcium is calcium carbonate. Products that contain calcium carbonate should be taken with food to ensure that they are properly absorbed.
Q. What is the best time to take OsteVit-D & Calcium tablets if my doctor has also prescribed other medication for osteoporosis (e.g. Fosamax, Actonel, Protos).
A. You should not take your OsteVit-D & Calcium tablets at the same time as these other medications as they will interfere with the absorption. It is recommended that you take OsteVit-D & Calcium tablets several hours apart from other medications for osteoporosis.
Q. Are there any side effects from taking OsteVit-D & Calcium?
A. Calcium supplements are usually well tolerated. Occasionally they may cause constipation, bloating and flatulence.
Q. How do I know if I have osteoporosis?
A. Talk to your doctor. They will assess your risk factors and may arrange x-rays and a bone density test. Remember that osteoporosis has no symptoms until a fracture occurs.
Q. I try to protect my skin from the sun. How do I know if I am Vitamin D deficient?
A. Talk to your doctor about your concern. They may arrange a blood test which measures the amount of Vitamin D in your body.
Q. Is there any difference between getting your calcium from food or from supplements?
A. There is no difference in the absorption of calcium from supplements or from food.
