About Dry Skin
The outer layer of the skin plays an important role in protecting the body from mechanical injury and attack by bacteria. The layer is also responsible for keeping moisture inside our skin and acts like a raincoat.
However, this waterproof layer must not be completely waterproof. It must allow some water through to keep the skin moisturised. If the outer layer of the skin dries out, the skin becomes rough and cracks develop. In order for the skin to function properly, it must be kept moisturised to prevent cracks.
Feet are especially prone to becoming dry but the elbow and knees can also be affected. If neglected, deep cracks may appear and cause discomfort.
